The Department of History at The Columbus (US) invites applications for the Carter V. Findley Professorship in Ottoman and Turkish History, to begin in Autumn 2020.
Rank is open, although the department’s preference is for a candidate who is a tenure-eligible assistant professor, an associate professor, or a recently-promoted full professor. Area of specialty is open. The candidate will be expected to teach the full range of Ottoman and modern Turkish history at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, to teach graduate courses in Ottoman and Turkish history, and to recruit and train Ph.D. students. The deed of gift stipulates that appointees to this position shall be distinguished scholar-teachers known for their positive interest in Turkish history and culture, their high standing in the international community of scholars in the field, their expertise in the history of the Turkish republic as well as of the Ottoman Empire, their broad linguistic command of the Ottoman and modern Turkish language of different periods, and the originality and impact of their historical scholarship. Holders of the professorship shall be appointed after a rigorous international search and on the recommendation of the chairperson of the Department of History.
Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in History or a related field at the time of application. Research competence in Ottoman and modern Turkish is required. Additional research competence in Arabic and/or Persian is preferred.
