30 Fellowships in the College for Interdisciplinary Educational Research (CIDER)

Educational trajectories are complex and influenced by many factors, including origin, school system, or economic conditions. Finding out more about educational processes requires transdisciplinary cooperation. This is precisely what the College on Interdisciplinary Educational Research – CIDER, a new innovative program, is about.

It is designed for post-docs from sociology, economics, psychology, and educational science who are engaged in empirical educational research and eager to cross the boundaries of their own discipline. The fellows in this program are supported by experienced senior researchers while realizing their projects. Furthermore, the College hosts workshops on a regular basis to provide opportunities for exchanging ideas. The main research questions of the College are:

  • Educational inequality and success against the odds
  • Competence development as an educational and social process
  • (Monetary and non-monetary) returns to education

The College will be financed by the Jacobs Foundation and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). Six Leibniz Institutes co-operate alongside the WZB: the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), the German Institute for International Educational Research (DIPF), GESIS – Leibniz-Institut for the Social Sciences, IPN – Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education, the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LifBI) and the Center for European Economic Research (ZEW).


The kick-off workshop of the new CIDER cohort will take place on October 15-17, 2019 at IPN


The College for Interdisciplinary Educational Research is an international and interdisciplinary
network of researchers in the field of education. The aims of the College are the advancement
of interdisciplinary collaboration and methodological training in quantitative educational
research, as well as the early independence and career development of young scholars. After
the College completed two successful rounds in the past six years, it now calls for applications
for a third cohort of 30 excellent junior scientists in educational science, psychology,
economics, and sociology in the early post-doctoral stage.

The fellowship does not include employment at the WZB or other Leibniz institutes. Fellows are
expected to participate in the above mentioned activities. The working language of the College

Application documents have to be in English (letters of reference may also be in German) and
must be submitted electronically in one file no later than April 15, 2019. Acceptance
notifications will be sent by July 15, 2019.

Required qualifications:
· Post-doctoral status (at least submitted dissertation thesis and not more than 3 years
after receiving the PhD)
· Above-average degree in one of the following disciplines: Education, psychology,
economics, or sociology
· Current employment (incl. scholarships) at a university or research institution in
· Research in the field of education or education-related issues
· Strong interest in interdisciplinary collaboration in quantitative-empirical research
projects (within the College)
· Strong skills in quantitative methods of empirical social research
· Excellent written and spoken English
