Call for papers for an international conference “Cross-Cultural Exchange and Cultural Practice: Narratives in Motion”

University of Guelph from July 27-28, 2020.

Literature and the arts are products of exchange and dialogue across cultures and through interactions with the cultural products of earlier eras.

Recognizing that cultural practices do not respect borders, this symposium will examine how cross-cultural exchanges have created hybrid identities and new cultural objects, structures and institutions. It will examine how cultural narratives are constructed, how they emerge, how they are received, disseminated, and how one mode of representation can come to replace another.

Organizers welcome paper proposals from scholars interested in the work of writers and artists in all media who navigate several linguistic and cultural arenas. Papers might deal with the creation of new cultural products or with the reception and transformation of cultural products as they cross borders, languages, cultures and eras.

Topics might include:

  • literatures of migration, immigration, exile
  • diasporic literatures
  • cultural borrowings and transfers in literature, film or the visual arts
  • cultural interactions and exchanges in literature, film or the visual arts
  • cultural appropriations
  • travellers, tourists and cross-cultural dialogue
  • entangled histories and memories
  • minority cultures and languages
  • networks of cultural mobility
  • reception and/or transformation of cultural products across borders and boundaries
  • confrontations and/or comparisons of cultural products
