WHAT

Call for contributions for the online journal “Viaggiatori. Circolazioni scambi ed esilio“. The issue will be edited by Marco Bettassa (Universität Stuttgart), and will be dedicated do the topic: “Migrations and religious minorities between Medieval and Contemporary Age”.

TOPICS

Migrations and religious minorities between Medieval and Contemporary Age Historians’ and social researchers’ analyses on the features of the migratory flows be-tween Medieval and Contemporary Ages dates back to some decades. Researches on States’ integration policies pointed out that the religious minorities joined very complex societies. At the same time, the analysis of the forms of the expulsions made clearer the various economic and political goals connected to the mass exodus. However, the protagonists of the migrations themselves received little attention. Which are the migrants-to-be strategies in the difficult pe-riods during which they flee (temporarily or definitely) or are expelled from their birthplaces? How do they deal with the ordeals of the new religious context? Under this respect, the anthro- pologist Pina Werbner’s studies on migratory flows are of primary importance – migrations could be analyzed as a process in which the different phases (departure, arrival, stabilization, development, and performances of specific ceremonies) are strictly connected (Werbner 1990). Thus, the geographical space appears continually changing due to the encounter with the other, i.e. both the tangible and intangible borders are living and ceaselessly redefined (Arru, Cagliotti, Ramella 2002). Analyzing religious minorities’ migrations can lead to a better understanding of the creative processes of the encounter with the social majorities. The present CfP asks the researchers to inquire the migratory flows both diachronically and synchronically, to describe the contexts of the religious minorities’ deeds during the different phases of their migration experiences.

The present Call for Papers supports inter- and multidisciplinary points of view, and it encourages researches, which use different approaches for holistic analysis. Special attention will be devoted to those investigations, which melt regional and global analyses of the migra-tory flows. Including but not limited to researches of history, demography, history of arts, an-thropology, economics, philosophy, and literature. Special attention to the researches concerning the following topics: 1.
  •  The migratory groups’ evolution concerning culture, identity, religion from the birth- places to the new areas
  •  The relationships between the social majority, on the one hand, the minorities on the other in the place of departure and of destination
  • The analysis of the demographic and social structures in the place of departure and of destination
  •  The analysis of the religious minorities’ action and resistance strategies during both the expulsion and the settlemen
  •  The minorities’ employment and working integration of the place of destinatio
  • Theoretical analysis concerning the integration models during the period under analysis
  • The evolution of the migrant groups’ communities focusing the communities’ hierarchies, élites, and patronage
  • The analysis of diaries, literature, and migrants’ mail as well
